Assessment Projects
As part of the course IT5830: Workshop: Assessment and Technology, I conducted two projects that implemented assessment techiniques into existing instruction at my place of employment with the goal of increasing learner engagement and comprehension. Project 1 focused on the insertion of various classroom assessment techiniques (CATs) into existing courses. For Project 2, I added a graphic organizer into an existing class. The graphic organizer enhanced what was previously text based materials presented via lecture by adding a visual component in the form of assessment.
ILT Competencies Demonstrated: 2, 7
Competency 2: I used one of the CATs in Project 1 (Background Knowledge Probe) as a method of conducting a needs assessment for the topic being covered. The Background Knowledge Probe was used by the instructor to gauge the participants' knowledge levels. The instructor was then able to immeditely adjust the instruction to accommodate the needs of that unique set of participants.
Competency 7: Both projects are examples of assessment AS learning, which is the use of assessment as an instructional method during instruction. With assessment AS learning, both participants and instructor are able to assess learning. I used all of the tools outlined in the design documentation below to assess student learning and performance during the initial implementation of the tools in a classroom setting.
